The initiative HECOF - The Higher Education Classroom of the Future - aims to create systemic change by promoting innovation in Higher Education teaching practices and national education reform by developing and testing an innovative way of personalising and adapting education, using digital data on students' learning activities in an immersive environment and using computational analysis techniques of data science and artificial intelligence.
The objectives of the research are:
Design and develop learning environments that are immersive and learning systems that are adaptive, personalised and focused on the academic discipline of chemical engineering.
Involve teaching staff and students in the definition and co-design of the learning system.
Promote the development and adoption of ethical and legal Artificial Intelligence technologies that respect fundamental rights in education.
Conduct pilot studies to evaluate the performance of the HECOF prototype system in real-world environments, with a focus on the learning experience, the benefits compared to traditional pedagogical models and, finally, the user experience.
Generate awareness and understanding of the benefits and challenges of integrating Virtual Reality with Artificial Intelligence for immersive and adaptive learning in Higher Education.
Driving the policy agenda by formulating recommendations on the role and use of Artificial Intelligence for personalised and adaptive learning in Higher Education and disseminating the work of HECOF at European and national policy level.
