The project STEP UP - Walkability for Women in Milan, funded by Fondazione Cariplo, focuses on the walkability of our cities from a gender perspective. Walkability refers to the suitability of the urban environment for walking in terms of the availability of nearby services, street connectivity, comfort of public spaces and road safety. It has been found that women and gender minorities experience the city differently from men, mainly because they are more concerned about their safety.
Through the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data, STEP UP assesses the level of nighttime walkability perceived by women in the city of Milan, identifies problematic areas or neighborhoods, and defines a set of guidelines to improve these areas.
The event, which will also be attended by the researcher Laura Galluzzo, will tell about the methodology and the results obtained by the project, but it will also be an opportunity to broaden the gaze to an international scale, focusing on the issue of perception of (in)safety, to understand what actions can be developed if we plan the city with a gender perspective.
