December 13, 2023, 6:30 p.m., Casa Xiaomi, Piazza Pio XI 5, Milan
The event is dedicated to the presentation of works by three ceramicists from the Kyoto region, selected for the ArgillĂ Italia 2022 international festival in Faenza.
The works, exhibited for the first time in Milan, are introduced by Irene Biolchini, professor of Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts and Guest Curator for the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza. Irene Biolchini has also been curator of site-specific exhibitions for the museum since 2012. She managed the program "For a Manifesto of 21st Century Ceramics" for ICA in 2021-22, later published as "For a Manifesto of New Ceramics" in 2023.
The ceramists:
Shinji Umemoto is committed to the ongoing search for new forms of beauty in ceramics, drawing elements from natural and man-made imagery, to create in tune with changing senses and circumstances.
Yu Kanai focuses on the expression offered by the clay itself and its possible alterations in texture before firing. His work focuses on the property of the raw material, considering production with clay as an act of instantaneous reproduction of the activity of the earth itself through irregular cracks.
Yuko Hayashi developed the "Tsuchibasami" (scissors) technique, derived from traditional Japanese cake decoration, using scissors to decorate porcelain, creating works that combine tradition and innovation.
The project is organized by LAB.I.RINT Research Atelier of the Department of Design, DE-TALES LTD., and COS KYOTO.
